Port Augusta
May / June

MAY Garfish are usually plentiful throughout the gulf system from Port Augusta southwards during this month. Fishers using Gents for bait will always out-fish those using alternative baits. Alternatively night fishing using a spot light and dab net is the quickest and easiest way to catch a good feed of Garfish. Trumpeters begin to disappear by the middle of May and these can be replaced by good catches of Squid. Best areas for Squid are drifting along the edges of banks over the long weed. King George Whiting are at their best this time of year and for those prepared to put in the time can catch their quota quite easily during this month. Yellowtail Kingfish have been showing up and there have been some large schools sighted throughout the top of Spencer Gulf.

JUNE Squid are prolific during June fishing just off the edges of weedy banks south of the Power Station. Yellowtail Kingfish are also just starting to come on the bite however the closure of the Power Stations this year may change the normal pattern of fish hanging around this area for the warm water???? Usually those prepared to put in the time can be rewarded with 40kg plus fish. The best location in the past has been around the Northern and Playford Power Stations. Also there are sometimes the odd Kingfish north of Port Augusta at the rail bridge.
King George Whiting become affected by the annual slime which begins to move in during June/July and if this is not enough to put you off there is an influx of blood worms around at this time. If you can lob on a spot where the fish are hungry you can still pick up a feed quite quickly. It is all a matter of finding the fish. Nothing new here I guess.
Salmon Trout and Australian Herring (Tommy Ruff) are always about and you can usually pick up a feed of these in June also.

Good luck and hope you all have tight lines.
